I bought both the 035 and the 040. The 035 was very smooth in and out but the 040 was not. It was a little difficult on the way out and almost impossible on the way back in. I have strong big hands and had to sometimes use 2 hands to retract it. I think I just get a bad one and that, like all Guardian Tactical Recons, the 040 is almost a perfect knife. I think it was because of the tightness of the blade. Like all OTF's you have some wobble. My 035 has some blade wobble but totally acceptable and better than most. I was very happy with the 035, so smooth and easy in and out. I noticed that the 040 had great tightness and the Blade has almost zero play like the Fantastic SOG Pentagon Blackout with is super smooth with the slider on the front, not side like the Recons, and nice side groves for you index finger and thumb. Definitely buy the Recon 035 and the SOG Blackout (easy to find 30% off coupons) I bought 2 and had one engraved. But back to the Recon 040. I have large hands and it felt like a Dream, such a incredible feeling in my hand with all its design. But on the way out it was a little hard and on the way back it was extremely difficult. I have strong hands and sometimes has to use both hands to try and get it to retract. I think the problem was, when the tech built this one in the shop, he made it way super-tight to avoid OTF blade play (everyone wants that Deadlock model OTF fixed blade feeling, the SOG Pentagon Blackout is probably the second tightest fixed play in the Industry with their special locking mechanism). So since the tech probably super-tightened the lockout and got it really tight, he ruined the main reason to buy a Tactical Recon which is their smooth actuation with the ceramic ball bearings. Love the way it fits in my hand, but just received a Dud and returned it. However, I am pretty convinced it was just a one-off and the majority of 040's are not this way? I hope so, it feels so perfect in you hand? And nice and smooth without being slippery and has a great grip. My advice is to buy it and hope you get a smooth one. If you do, it will be one of your favorite EDC's.

This otf is so smooth it’s almost impossible to describe. To put it simply it fires way better then it’s competition thanks to the ball bearings under the switch. The guardian tactical recon 040 and Eknives are a pleasure to work with.
