    Zero Blade Play is Legit!

Posted by Andy F. on Jan 8th 2025

Gen III Ultratech is slightly larger and significantly more comfortable and easier to deploy. They made it cleverly adjustable, but I can confirm my copy has zero blade play, and has not yet failed. Even compared to my Deadlock, there's no blade play (and my Deadlock does fail). I keep checking, and it remains solid. Good job!

The new zero play Gen III from Microtech is awesome. The action is smooth and easy to open and the zero blade play just feels solid. Great little pocket knife

    ZBT? Not so...

Posted by John Queenan on Jan 7th 2025

After a mere ~50 open/close cycles, the blade has a rattle. Blade play is about that of a Hera II now, which at the end of the day isn't intolerable for a Hera II but for a product bold enough to advertise itself as zero blade play, it is unacceptable. I can see people retuning this. This is no Hawk. That said… I'm keeping it because 1. I'm lazy 2. it's designed for tuning by the user which I want to try—just didn't expect to need to do so soon and 3. practically speaking the blade play is no worse than any Microtech prior to ZBT, which, let's be real, was always just a minor quibble until ZBT. tried to raise the bar with the ultimate promise. We'll see if it indeed loses ZBT after re-tuning it. Of course, that's after I buy a torx 30. Money pit of a hobby. The overall design is great. Quality is excellent although the thumb button needs more tumbling to remove burrs, it's a cheesegrater. It serves as the Medium to my Hera II (which is the Large) and my Hera mini (the Small) so it rounds out the collection nicely. It's likely the most useful as a result, for my needs. As a knife it is a solid recommend. But expect to be utilizing the "feature" of "user tunable" components and expect to have to use that barcode in the box for access to the how-to videos.

    Kind of what I...

Posted by Steve Goddard on Jan 6th 2025

Knife received in perfect order, per all transactions I've had with EKnives. Opened the package on Sunday night, and the ZBT Ultratech locked up tight as a drum. Carried it and showed it off to a few buds, but by Thursday and couple hundred cycles there was noticeable blade play in the x and y axis. Disappointing for sure. But honestly I kind of expected it. MT advertises that IF blade play comes into factor years after owning, you can adjust it out. When I heard this, I knew right then that this is not going to last. ZBT lockup lasted 4 days in my experience. Now what to do. Take it apart and "adjust" it per MT instructions and risk damaging it since that is what usually happens to me in a situation like this, send it to MT to adjust?, live with it, or jettison it down the road. Not sure yet, but just know what to expect if you get one. I'm going to guess MT will end up putting the ZBT technology to the pasture in future. Going to be more of these to get complaints and sent back to MT than they will likely want to deal with. Sorry, but this is just my honest opinion. The regular tolerance OTF MT's are great, I bet that is what they decide to stick with.

    WOW!

Posted by Dan Gruzd on Jan 6th 2025

I’ve always wanted a Gavin Hawk OTF but the price tag imho seems too high. The ZBT checks all the same boxes. Beautiful fit and finish and amazing lock up! I have arthritic hands and have no issues opening and closing the knife. Well done Microtech. As always the customer service from EKnives is beyond reproach!

My knife arrived in perfect condition and with perfect, "zero blade tolerance." The action is smooth and easily deployed. One of the easiest OTF deployments I've encountered. Grab one when you can. They sell out quickly.
