New Spyderco Knives "Michael Burch" Chubby Titanium Folding Knife C183TIP

Spyderco is known for pumping out knives on the regular, so when they come out with something "new" it is kind of expected. late 2014, they decided to release 2 much anticipated custom knife collabs. The Rubicon, a Peter Carey design which one the "2014 Blade Show Import Knife of the Year, and this fantastic model, appropriately named, "Chubby."

Somewhat overshadowed in light of the Rubicon's award is this collaboration with well respected custom knife maker, Michael Burch. If you don't know who Michael Burch is, just click on his name and you will be taken to his Burchtree knives.  His pieces are in high demand and if you have the privilege of ever getting on his waitlist (good luck 3 yrs out) then you will be in the minority. That said, he makes a killer blade and he has come together with Spyderco to produce the Burch Chubby folder.

Handle

One word describes the Spyderco Chubby, stocky! It is a smaller but robust folding knife with an overall length of just 5.96" a seemingly perfect EDC size for sure. The handle is made from thick titanium divided by a partial G-10 backspacer. The inner edge features two curves for the index and middle finger that essentially defines folder as a 3 finger knife. The handle measures just 3.66" making it a "stubby chubby". :)

3 Inlay carbon fiber discs resonate on the side of the Chubby's titanium handle giving it a little eye candy. The Chubby locks up via a RIL Chris Reeve integral frame lock for rock solid lockup. Attached to the back of the handle is an oversized tip up, right hand carry pocket clip with "curve appeal" and fitting to be part of the Chubby. There is also a lanyard hole available to in fact lengthen the Chubby's handle should you feel the need to do so.

Blade

Where the rubber meets the road is the Spyderco Chubby's blade, which is the first thing you gravitate toward when you get your hands on this knife. A common theme with Michael Burch knives is blades that are wide at the base and taper to a point. The Chubby is no different and it is easy to see why.

The 2.3" CPM S30V blade has  a double bevel hollow ground blade that is very eye catching to say the least. The continuous edge has a deep curve that gives the blade a cutting edge length of 2.25" and a finish that is a thing of beauty. The patented Spyderco Round Hole is added for easy blade deployment and the Spyderco logo is etched in the blade.
