Gil Hibben Knives - Legendary Cutlery From The Master Knife Maker
Posted by Clayton on Jul 8th 2021
To be a master knife maker you have to spend countless hours honing your craft. For Gil Hibben that was not a problem especially considering he loved the outdoors from his time spent in the Navy and being an Alaskan hunting guide.
You don't just become the head of Knife Maker's Guild or inducted into the cutlery hall of fame by being mediocre. Hollywood doesn't come knocking at your door asking for your help with knives for certain major motion pictures if you are just average.
History
Gil Hibben created his first knife, the "bowie knife" after he left the Navy in1956 and has never looked back. After selling his first bowie knife for $45 Gil decided to become a professional knifemaker and has made a lifelong career out of it.
Hibben's knowledge of metals came while working at Boeing Aircraft as a machinist and in 1964 began making knives full time. Gil started working with a then uncommon 440C steel (which is the now the industry standard) and claims he is the first to ever use it in knife making
Gil moved to Utah in 1965 and was responsible for designing all of Brownings line of custom knives. An avid martial artist (kenpo) and fisherman, a few years later Hibben would move to Alaska and would become a hunting guide and develop many fighting and hunting knives.
