According to the Official Code of Georgia Annotated (O.C.G.A.) 16-11-127, it is unlawful for any person to carry or own any knife with a blade which folds, closes, or retracts into the handle or sheath when the knife has a blade of over 5 inches in length unless that person falls into one of the following categories:
- A Peace Officer
- A Person in the Armed Forces of the United States
- A Person employed at a state mental hospital or developmental center
- A Warden, Deputy Warden, Superintendent, or Chief of Police
- A Chief Penal Officer or their deputy
- A Judge of the Superior Court, State Court, Juvenile Court, or Magistrate Court
- A Probation Officer
- A Parole Officer
- A Peace Officer Academy Instructor
Which Characteristics Make Switchblades Illegal?
While the law doesn't specifically mention "OTF switchblades," it does make it illegal to carry or possess any knife with a blade that folds, closes, or retracts into the handle or sheath. This means that OTF switchblades are included in this ban.
The only knives that are exempt from this law are those with blades that are less than five inches in length. This exemption applies to all knives, not just switchblades.
